There are three main types of fixed internet and telephone networks.

1. Telephone networks

2. Cable networks

3. Mobile networks

Telephone networks (DSL)

Many providers offer internet and phone via telephone networks. They compete, so prices and service quality often change.

Cable networks (DSL)

Cable internet and phone are offered by four providers: Kabel BW, Unity Media, Kabel Deutschland, and Telecolumbus. They serve distinct regions and largely do not compete.

What’s important for the customer:

5. Free landline calls

Mobile networks (LTE) – wireless mobile and fixed internet and telephone. Not recommended as tablet mobile internet across Germany. Data limits apply and speeds drop after usage cap. Use only if DSL/cable are not available or too slow.
Key things to know when signing with an internet & phone provider:
Different situations

1. No prior internet or phone connection.

a) Choose a provider.
b) Check availability at your address (Verfügbarkeit prüfen).
c) Fill contract and attach necessary documents (as for mobile comms).

2. You already have internet and/or phone.

I want to change provider and keep my old number.
a) Select new provider.
b) Verify availability.
c) If in same DSL network, fill contract and mark number for porting. New provider sends “Kündigung mit Portierung” form — sign & return. After contract ends, transfer is handled.
If switching from DSL to cable: if 4–6 months remain on old contract, cable provider may offer free internet up to 6 months and transfer number later.
Note: If customer cancels independently, porting may fail. Provider must handle cancellation & porting.

3. You have connection but want a new number.

I want new provider and new number.
a) Customer cancels contract themselves.
b) Receive confirmation and expiry date.
c) Sign new contract ~2–3 weeks before expiration.

Note: Setup can take ~1 week to 1 month, depending on technical staff availability.

4. I’m moving house.
a) Moving does not automatically cancel contract. Customer must inform provider, and services are transferred to new address. Exception if provider cannot serve new location or fulfill contractual services.
